Austin Vet Center has been a steady source of support for me as an Iraq War combat Veteran, and I highly recommend it to others adjusting to civilian life or dealing with invisible wounds from deployment. The staff create a welcoming, respectful environment where counselors truly listen, remember your story, and work with you to set realistic goals. They understand PTSD, anger, and relationship challenges as normal responses to combat and offer both individual and group counseling—plus evidence‑based therapies like CBT and EMDR. I’ve especially valued the camaraderie in their OIF/OEF and mixed‑era groups, as well as the practical tools from their anger and stress management sessions. They even support families, recognizing that combat impacts everyone. At Austin Vet Center, I feel seen and
While appreciate that they offer services to veterans they can’t seem to keep any therapists employed for more than 6 months. So if you want to meet someone new and then get shuffled off to somebody else 3 times a year go for it…. Otherwise its a waste of time.
Ever since Jerry West retired from Austin Vet Center this place is terrible. They have moved 3 diffrent places. Each location is old run down and crappy. This current spots has led paint asbestos and rats. Not the place to go for mental health. Austin could care less about the veteran population. No wonder 22 a day.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS NOT NOT NOT THE AUSTIN VA CLINIC, IT IS THE VETERAN CENTER!!! They are different! I have two AMAZING therapists here that always go above and beyond to help me and my partner in individual and couple’s counseling. My partner isn’t a vet and has been searching for an individual therapy option, and our couple’s counselor reached out to numerous of her colleagues to see if anyone had an opening (which they did!) I’ve never been partial to anything VA-related, but these are truly amazing people and I’m blessed to have found them!
So I called, hoping to be around other veterans. Well even though I was in theater as a Patriot missile crew member, I’m not cool enough. This entity is funded by grants. The Vet Center as on organization has no policy stating it’s required to have “boots on the ground” Specifically in Iraq no mention of the Afghan war. So I’m disappointed. I live Austin and the support for veterans is atrocious. No VFW only the legion. Only one VSO that’ doesn’t answer his phone and if you leave a message he doesn’t call back. Seriously, it’s outrageous.
