Duke Gastroenterology Clinic - Clinic 2J

My experience was positive, no issues. All good and I felt like my Dr. spent enough time with me and listened, very organized.

I have had 2 hiatal hernia and fundoplication surgeries over the past 5 years at Duke. Unfortunately my wonderful GI doctor left the hospital and no other doctor seemed to pick up his patients.I'm now having problems again and I’m being treated as if I were a brand new patient. I called for an appointment in September of 2024 and couldn’t get scheduled until October 2025. I have now (8/2025) received a call that the doctor has to reschedule and my appointment was pushed to June 2026! What kind of healthcare is this???

Most of my Duke experiences have been an excellent standard of care but as others have said, Duke gastro quality of care is sub-par. My doctor ordered a manometry with pH. This is by far the WORST medical experience I’ve had, even after 10 surgeries The tube is painful and the nurses are uncompassionate about it. The clinic has ZERO after-care support in place. This is a 24 hour monitor which has to be worn overnight. My file clearly states that I’m allergic to adhesives which I confirmed with the nurse but she still used regular tape to secure the tube. So it was itchy the whole time, about to break into hives. I found out after the tube became very bothersome in my throat that after 4:30, you’re basically on your own to suffer. For the first year of my time at Duke, when I was able to get in, I had a good experience. My doctor identified my GI disorder and did prior authorizations required to get me my medication. In the last two years, the department's care has declined incredibly. No response from my doctor on MyChart EVER, prior authorizations taking months, not going through required processes with insurance, etc. Just awful.

This review is solely for the scheduling team or lack there of! Like how can such a large organization literally have only ONE person scheduling appointments? I’ve been trying for 2 days to cancel an upcoming appointment that I can not cancel via MyChart and can’t get anyone to pick up. When I use the call back feature I don’t get a call or a missed call, just a voicemail. All other calls from Duke Health come through to my phone but calls from the GI scheduling service. How is that possible? I’m sure you all have a lot of no shows since people have a hard time getting through just to cancel an appointment. No wonder procedures are booked 4 months out!
