I am a person with Parkinson's Disease. Early on in the illness, I developed lingual dysarthria, the weakening of the muscles of my mouth, face and throat. My speech slurred, my voice became soft. My neurologist sent me to speech therapy. I worked with four different therapists, but no one knew how to work with my dysarthria; that was, until I was sent to Nipa Raval. Let me share how she helped me. Nipa is a fully qualified Speech Pathologist and I'm a senior in my seventies. As with all forms of treatment, I want information and exercises I can use to confront the bane of so many folks with Parkinson's: loss of muscle tone used in speech. but also important for eating, swallowing and breathing. We moved with her to Amba for several reasons: 1) She developed a very positive interaction/ relationship with my wife; 2) She has continued to go above and beyond just our sessions to understand my wife's condition (Primary Progressive Aphasia) and adjust as my wife's condition has evolved.
