Attention: Karen Wastler; UPMC, President. I accompanied my significant other to the hospital for a surgical procedure ordered by her gynecologist, Dr. Kodjo A. Karikari, at UPMC. I was present before the surgery, expecting to be informed of any serious complications or instructions so I could assist her. Even then, the gynecologist did not acknowledge me or provide any guidance. No surgeon or staff explained what would happen, and after the surgery, no one communicated any details or complications at all, despite my presence and my time off work. This lack of basic communication is unacceptable. After discharge, she called two to three times reporting severe pain. Never had a problem with UPMC until now my mom arrived by ambulance on monday 1/19 at approximately 2:30pm & I usually transport & stay wirh her however I was diagnosed with type a flu & it was best I stayed home. That was one of the worst decisions I've ever made! She fell through the cracks & felt ignored, lonely & scared. There was no communication what so ever for her or myself. I called to ask questions & got nothing answered. (I requested upmc) she was told she was going to be admitted 5 hrs later & approximately 2:30am she was taken to a room, now I understand being busy but its unacceptable not to communicate with an 82 year old patient. She gets up to her room & Her "team" had no personality & was very short with her, now trust me if I was able to I would've been up there letting

I’ve only stayed at the ER, but I put a separate positive review for that! My mother had gotten surgery in August and after a couple weeks, her stitches came undone. She got an infection so she originally went to UPMC Urgent Care, but they recommended her to the surgeon center at the hospital. They took care of my mother for a couple days and redid her stitches. Food and drinks were provided to her, along with a TV for entertainment and a clean bathroom with a shower included as well. The room she stayed in was so clean and nice, it almost felt like a 5 star hotel room. The nurses and doctors were amazing and did their best at helping her recover as quickly as possible! When I came to visit, I was introduced by security guards at the main entrance. I’m really glad the hospital has security

If I could this hospital zero stars I would. This was the worst experience ever. My grandson went to the ER on 12/28 at 7pm. His labs were ready by 9pm, not one nurse or doctor came to us to say anything regarding his results. I continued to go to the nurses station to see what was going to see where my grandson would be seen. They continued to say that they were short staffed but everyone that came after me was seen and left. This was highly unacceptable. They finally took us back at 1am and I continued to ask when were going to see a doctor. A nurse came in around 2am and stated that his results were normal and that she would come back to check on my grandson. That never happened and we finally left around 2:30am. Never again, I will travel to another hospital.

I had a very unpleasant experience at the upmc emergency room today. It started off well, no problems with registration. I sat in the waiting room, in the same chair, was called for vital signs, then for triage and later for an ultrasound. I returned to my chair and waited for the next 3 hours. I finally thought to check the patient portal for any updates and I saw my 'After Visit Summary' ! Imagine my surprise! The charge nurse claims that my name was called 3 times and I didn't answer so he took me off the board. While I was sitting in the waiting room, I heard many names called and at no time was a name called when someone did not respond. So I really don't know where or when he did his calling. I will never ever return to that ED.
