UCSF Pediatric Orthopedics Redwood Shores

I fractured my ankle in 2 places and was informed at the ER that I will need surgery. I went to my primary physician for a referral to an orthopedic surgeon and she told me that my fracture was quite interesting, and she had never seen anything like it. Fortunately, I was referred to Dr Lan Chen who specializes in foot and ankle surgery and she reassured me that my fracture was not all that uncommon, and she had performed many surgeries similar to that of mine. I was put at ease and Dr. Chen wrote down everything I needed to do before my surgery. The day of the surgery, she came by to see how I was doing during pre-op as well as post-op and answered any questions or concerns I had. She called me the next day to see how I was doing and made sure I had all the medications that were ordered,

Went to Dr. L Chen for a foot problem I’ve been having for over 7 months. Prior tendon tear and chronic pain due to an alien problem. She didn’t have a good answer for me, and told me to basically deal with it. The only good thing I got out of the visit was the fact that she re-iterated that it’s not a structural issue (which I already knew due to past x-rays). She didn’t recommend further testing and did not even suggest a follow up. She basically washed her hands off the situation like it was above her. I found her to be disinterested as well. One thing that really got to me was that she was trying to manipulate my ankles to test the mobility and hyperextended my bad ankle with no proper care and I actually said “ouch.” My ankle is more swollen than usual since my visit, and feels like

Dr. Zheng is absolutely wonderful. She provides a high level of quality care, paired with compassion & intelligence. She is constantly providing the best & several options for treatment as well as going above & beyond to ensure all areas are covered within her care. All her patients are lucky to be seen by her!

The clinic was efficiently run. I think my doctor was very knowledgeable. However, I was rushed and Dr. Chen didn't look at my chart first but BEFORE she asked which foot was it that I was in to see her about. A proper review or glance at my chart to review my rays on file would have gotten her 5 stars.

This was my first experience with UCSF and I was seen at the Redwood Shores Clinic. Everything from the welcome/request to set up an account to the instructions to prepare for the visit were clear and prompt. The front desk staffer was very welcoming and polite and there was a limit of 9 people in the reception area so there was a safer feeling about any COVID concerns. The nurse was who checked me into the exam room was pleasant professional and had a great sense of humor. Dr Zhong Zheng was great- open friendly interested and prepared. She explained her assessment of my issues and explored several possible approaches with me. She asked good probing and clarifying questions and I felt very “heard”. Very happy and highly recommend!
