The Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing at Barnwell

I've been coming up here for a very long time, and made it permanent in the late 80's. I have always heard the comments and horror stories about Barnwell, and I considered myself lucky that I would never have to deal with someplace like that. Fast forward to now. Have "been in the system" now for awhile. Life has a habit of not always doing what it was supposed to. Long story short - it turns out I need some physical and occupational therapy, skilled nursing care and a stable environment. I thought about fighting it when I was in the hospital, but it probably wouldn't have done anything or made a difference. So here I am - I have been here about a month. My initial reaction when I came through the doors? "This place doesn't seem so bad..." And lo and behold - it's NOT!! Color me shocked!

In my time spent at Barnwell I have found the experience to be wholly helpful. In my recovery from a place where I could not walk to where I am now; which is me walking wherever I have to go. I want nothing more than to make it clear just how much Barnwell’s therapy has made this transformation possible. I am also grateful for great help the Barnwell therapists have given my husband, also a patient the opportunity to make improvements similar to my own. Also unlike other facilities their food is really tasty. For instance: their chicken curry is fantastic. Not only is the food great so is their hairdresser. The staff across the board is helpful and willing to lend a hand. The activity staff are warm, interesting, and friendly. We love them.

The people in activities and unit 2 are great. The activities department runs very well and they all work together as a team. They make the activities as fun for the residents as possible. We also have special days where Miss Sandy and sometimes a few others will make special food for the residents to enjoy. Unit 2 works well together as a team. At the end of the day they always get their job done one way or another. You also will not meet a more friendly, funny person than Ralph in reception. He is truly amazing. A

I’ve been a resident for 8 years. And the ONLY positivity I can say about this place is the Activity department. Activities has consistently been great as far as planning different activities for residents and including everyone. From bingo, name that tune, karaoke, spelling bees daily coffee time and even dollar days! They have parties every month for birthdays of the month and holiday parties for every calendar holiday and even some like Mardi Gras, there are monthly lunch club and brunch summer BBQs. And the food & snacks for those parties is made by Sandy in Activities and it’s always delicious!! The director of Activities is the most kind, smart, fun loving human being I have ever met!!! She is the best! All in all activities is like a breath of fresh air!!!! I absolutely love them!

This place is terrible. The last couple visits we had with my great grandmother were sad. They do not take care of the residents at all. My grandmothers hair was all knotted, she was very skinny, her nails were dirty and long, and she had rashes! They brought her food in and just left it on a tray when she can’t even feed herself. The whole places smells like urine. The “caretakers” do not seem to care at all. We asked for water for her and it took them over 30 minute to get it. The place was so incredibly sad. Please don’t send your loved once’s here.
