Duke Vascular Surgery and Vein Center at Brier Creek

I waited 4 months to see Dr. Shortel at Duke vascular surgery, only to to see a Dr Daniel that told me Dr Shortel was retiring and not seeing patients and not doing any more surgeries. He said he could not do that vascular surgery I needed for a chronic ulcer in a toe that's been going on for 2 years. Referred me to another doctor in the same building that would need to do further tests. That was the second foot doctor in the Duke University Network. After seeing four foot doctors in the Wake Forest Baptist Network that could do nothing for my blood circulation. They all took my money and referred me to the next doctor with no healthcare whatsoever. I'm done seeing Duke doctors. I may be done seeing all doctors. They just don't seem to do any work for the money

Visiting Dr. Cynthia Shortell and her entire team at Duke has been the most traumatic experience of my life. I spent two years with Dr. Shortell trying to resolve a simple venous insufficiency only to be ghosted at the end. Around August 2022, I noticed eczema on my ankle, where my veins were already bulging. I took an appointment with one of Dr. Shortell's PAs (Andrea) since that was the earliest one available, and she was the most ignorant medical staff I've come across in my 40 years of life. It was so evident that even I could tell that it was the beginning of venous dermatitis, but she didn't know what to say. She didn't even know what venous dermatitis was. She told me to see a dermatologist and also told me Duke didn't have bandwidth and so I should look for a dermatologist outside

I like the lobby area and it's comfortable. The staff are friendly and approachable. Free tea and coffee while you wait is a plus. Arrived early for appt and was seen before appt time - that's another plus.

One of the best clinics of any type I have been to - and that it a LOT. Dr. Shortell, Dan Geerson, PA-C, Reece - they're all fantastic. Really took the time to talk about what was going on and work with me to do whatever we could to avoid surgery, which ended up being necessary anyway. I spent six days in the Abdominal Transplant Unit there at Duke, and I was visited by either Dr. Shortell or Dan every single day for more than the cursory "stick your head in and say hi" type visit. When symptoms started to reoccur about 18 months after the surgery, I immediately asked for the VA to send me back to this wonderful team. I go back this morning, and know I will be well taken care of.
