UVA Health UVA Specialty Pharmacy

I have an Aetna plan through UVA. As such, UVA is the only specialty pharmacy that is approved for use through my insurance. However, trying to get a prior authorization approved is literally impossible as they seem entirely incapable of properly submitting it to insurance. My experience with UVA specialty pharmacy began with trying to get my trigger shot (ovidrel) approved in July 2023. I spent weeks going back and forth between the pharmacy, my clinic, and Aetna. My clinic filled out their portion of the PA, UVA claimed they submitted it, but insurance never received it and was unable to process it. I needed for my upcoming IUI (and then subsequent cycles) and it was time sensitive and getting down to the wire. In the end, I opted to pay out of pocket and filled my prescription (easily)

Absolutely abysmal automated call service that doesn't reliably provide number pad options and the Ai service you have to use in its place can't pick half of what you say.

I'm not normally a UVA specialty pharmacy patient but when I urgently needed help getting a medication out of stock everywhere else in Charlottesville, they went above and beyond for me. They were incredibly helpful and accommodating every step of the way. Can't recommend them enough - thank you, thank you!

They make life so much easier for me. They bill both my insurances. They get me every discount possible. They go the extra mile to get unusual meds approved. They are kind, efficient, easy to use, and make my life simpler. I’m so grateful.

I left using a big box retail pharmacy over a year ago and I have been SO impressed with UVA Pharmacy especially the Specialty/mail order dept. I recommend them ALL the time.
