Santa Rosa Optometry: Josue Gonzalez Pena, OD & Michael Shulkin, OD

Went to their new location recently and it is definitely better than the last place, it’s bigger and just more open. ALL of the staff were very professional and really, really nice. In the past this place seemed to make you feel crappy about having medi-cal and the receptionists were rude but not the case anymore! 😁

I’m surprised it’s taken me this long to write Dr. Shulkin a glowing review. He’s been my optometrist since I started wearing contacts my freshman year of high school (~15 years ago!). I’ve moved a couple of times and had to go to different optometrists during those times but recently went back to Dr. Shulkin and couldn’t have had a better experience in getting new glasses. He is knowledgeable, responsive and super helpful. His team is also very sweet (and busy! Be kind to them!) I’m very lucky to have had him to fall back on for quick and effortless lens & contact care. He’s such an expert!

I definitely do not understand the negative reviews for Dr. Shulkin. I have been going to him for 5 years now and he is truly caring, amazing, professional and most of all knowledgeable and smart. I have received both my contacts and glasses from his office, he is centrally located, and a fast turnaround. Appointments are quick, if you have an emergency he always makes time for you. Definitely a doctor you're comfortable with and super caring. I can't say enough about him.

I called to ask if my insurance was accepted. They said it was. After the appointment, that told me my visit wasn't covered and that I would receive a bill. Also, they were uncoordinated. I spent over an hour and a half in the office for a standard eye exam. I won't be coming back

The front desk person seemed like she didn't love her job/want to be there and wasn't super polite. They only had a few options but a couple repeats on the table. I handed my choice to the lady at the desk and we had to wait for the other woman to hand back the frame aligner and she rudely said she has it, we have to wait. Glad they take mediCal but could be better and i wish they werent the only option. Dr. Schulkin told me I didn't need an appointment but I called and I did, according to what it said on the form so that was a miscommunication i didnt understand why he told me that or didnt know? And could let patients know. It says on the door you need an appointment too. At least one desk person has been nice. See about future appointments.
