As a retired veteran it's just so sad to see the care at the Balboa ER hasn't improved in 30 plus years since the last time I had to go there! I've been battling a respiratory infection for over two weeks until finally on 01/16, it was impossible to sleep so I drove to the ER, and checked in at 0200. After two weeks I was getting worse, and knew I needed antibiotics because NyQuil wasn't helping. I passed up two civilian ER's thinking they would be swamped on a Friday night, so my chances at Balboa would be better. I was so wrong! I gave birth to my son at this hospital as an active duty service member using the Home Pregnancy Leave Program. What I experienced in Labor & Delivery was traumatic, frightening, and medically negligent. Prior to my due date, I attempted to attend a Labor & Delivery tour. The waiting room was completely full, and despite being visibly nine months pregnant, no effort was made to accommodate me. I left without receiving any tour or orientation as a first-time mother. On October 24, 2019, after being in severe labor all day, vomiting from pain, and trying to manage contractions on my own, I arrived at the hospital in active labor. On 07NOV25 we were contacted by medical regarding scheduling an appointment via phone call and the HM who responded displayed impatience, unprofessionalism and lack of maturity. Upon answering her questions to the best of our abilities she continuously came off as if we were inconveniencing her. We requested time slots that would work best for the clinic to schedule our appointment and instead of giving us availabilities she became hostile and pressed for us to give her a time slot rather than working with us to find a open time frame. We requested information on the location of where the appointment would be and rather than providing a simple address she sucked her teeth and hung up the phone. Absolutely terrible, it takes them a total of 5 hours just to get checked out for a fever. Absolutely ridiculous. When told a doctor would see me “shortly” it took 3 more hours for me to get checked out.
