John Muir Medical Center Emergency Room

I brought my 8-year-old son, who has autism, to the Emergency Room at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, and I was very satisfied with the care we received. The staff were professional, patient, and understanding of his special needs. The nurses and doctors handled the situation calmly and treated my son with kindness and respect. The medical team explained everything clearly and made sure we were comfortable throughout the visit. I truly appreciate their compassion and professionalism. Thank you to the entire ER team for providing excellent care.

What stood out wasn’t the scare, but the people. Calm, professional, efficient. They poked when needed, ignored me when not, explained just enough, and moved on. Exactly what you want in a moment like that. Competence is underrated comfort. A great care team in a busy hospital.

I received excellent care for a cardiac problem that needed emergency treatment at the John Muir Walnut Creek Emergency Room. I recommend it without reservation. Visiting from another state, I was suffering from the flu and had woken up in the middle of the night with my heart racing. The next morning, an urgent care clinic did an EKG (machine-read as sinus tachycardia) and referred me to an emergency room; I went to John Muir Walnut Creek because it was near to where I was staying. My wife and I arrived at the hospital that afternoon, and knowing how ERs function, we had both brought books to read. After passing through security, I was immediately directed to the check-in desk. When I told them my problem, a technician took my vital signs, and then things started to happen very quickly.

Horribly slow 9 hour service to obtain a CT scan and IV in the ER. I checked in at 3 pm and was discharged at midnight in September 2025. 3 hours of initial waiting in the ER waiting before getting called in to get my vitals. My experience with John Muir Health highlights exactly what is wrong with our current healthcare system. They billed and collected $23,000 from my private insurance for my care. While the insurance 'covered' it, these inflated costs are a major part of why the system feels broken. It's hard to feel like a patient when you're treated like a revenue stream.

TL;DR - Great experience! All of the medical staff, nurses, doctors were wonderful. It’s an ER so long waits are expected when you aren’t in critical condition; 4 hours is a GREAT wait time for ERs! I went to this ER last night after debating if my severe nerve pain warranted being checked out for something more serious. I have a few chronic health issues so I’m unfortunately used to going to the ER or an urgent care when things get bad enough, but this time, it was more-so just to rule out something more serious since my pain was in a severe-but-still-tolerable place by my chronic pain standards. They were busy, of course, because it’s an ER and there’s almost always going to be other more urgent/critical cases coming in, so a wait is expected. But they funneled people through each phase
