On November 10th, 2025, our 1-year-old goldendoodle, Finney, lost his life in the care of Heartland Animal Hospital, and I feel compelled to warn others. Finney began vomiting the day before, but was still his happy, playful self. I scheduled the earliest appointment possible for Monday morning. His condition worsened quickly, so I arrived at 8:30 AM—half an hour early—and staff had to bring him inside on a gurney as he did not want to walk. X-rays showed a rock blocking his bowel. Dr. Tom Shroyer told me they would do the surgery that morning, shook my hand and that they would take care of him. They stated they would call me when the surgery was complete and I believed them. A little over an hour later, I received a call—not to say the surgery was done, but to tell me they suddenly “di
I would highly recommend Heartland Animal Hospital in Fairfax to anyone. They go above and beyond to ensure your furbabies are comfortable during their visits. They are compassionate, caring, understanding, and knowledgeable. We have a 6.5 year old Great Dane and just adopted a new furbaby from a shelter. Our new guy had his first visit yesterday!
We have used multiple vets in the area over the last 15 years and choose Heartland. Quality care without pressuring you into services or "packages". It's not Anamosa cheapest, but the care is better. The staff, and specifically Dr. Tom, are incredible and truly care about your pet.
$50 for establishing a new pet. About $200 all in to bring my cat to them for the first time and get urine test, exam, antibiotics and painkiller shots. I was pretty happy with that. Dr. Tom and the tech (Chelsea?) treated my cat with care and handled her gently, quickly diagnosed the problem and provided a solution professionally. Answered all my questions, were transparent about pricing, and didn't push anything unnecessary. The place feels modern and clean. I will return
I didn’t feel like writing a review when these events occurred, but since I have heard horror stories from others who have gone to this vet, I feel it’s important to share our story. These events happened between September of 2024 and March 2025. We brought our cats in for a routine check up and vaccines. We specifically had concerns about our elderly lady, Bobbi, who had been rapidly losing weight and vomiting consistently. All of our other cats (we have five total) were healthy, were weighed, got their vaccines, and were sent on their way. However, Dr. Hansen suggested running a blood panel and urine tests on Bobbi due to our concerns. It was determined by those results that Bobbi was in stage 2 renal failure. Of course, a scary thing to hear! we knew nothing about this disease and wer
