Avita Home Health & Hospice

My encounter was less than stellar. I ended up switching my loved one to another service in a matter of 4 days. It needs a major overhaul in organization, communication and compassion. Transitioning a loved one to hospice is stressful enough and them working with me on this was nothing but stressful. Saving grace for me over the weekend was the nurse Chris so shout out to her for that! Update: In talking to a manager at Avita she was genuinely concerned with our experience and will take our information to better the process. I wish her the best of luck!

We used them for my dad last year. The people who delivered the hospital bed were not competent at all. They didn't even have the bed put together right and he almost fell in it. Then after dad passed, the same people scratched the wood floors with their carelessness and admitted the bed was not right and could have collapsed at any time!! Nurse Jennifer was terrible and rude every visit. I did call Avita and complain, nothing happened and Karen defended them. I should have known better than to use them again for my mom, but here we are. The nurse Chris is phenomenal!! No comfort meds were ever brought on opening of the case on Sunday. Ok, fine, mom was stable. Monday mom was declining fast and multiple calls were made to Karen and the office, even after explaining that mom was struggling

I recently had a friend pass away who is cared for by Avita hospice. When I went to pay my last respects before the funeral came to pick up the body I was mortified to see that he had his eyes open like he was staring at me... being a retired nurse I know that that's not proper postmortem care. I spoke with the supervisor there and they explained to me that the funeral homes do not want the eyes closed. I have never heard such a thing. So I called three funeral homes in this area and they told me that was not true that they never heard that. My other friends who were there had never heard of such a thing either and we've all experienced the death of a loved one. Never have we seen them with their eyes open! Hospice allowed my Mother to have a terrible death. She struggled to breathe and had pain for the last 12 hours of her life. The doctor would not prescribe medication to ease the struggle to breathe nor provide pain medication. The doctor instead focused on medication to lower her fast heart rate. As a family member I could care less about her heart rate. I do care that she had to suffer for hours without help. I have worked in hospice and palliative care for years at another hospital. I know there are medications that could have been given immediately so she would not have had to suffer. This is not the hospice company to use if you want your loved one to die peacefully. This hospice sucked they were unsupportive and showed little to no compassion for My stepdad and my mother I am Appalled at how my mother and I were treated I will definitely not recommend Them to anyone! The chaplain was the only Person that showed any compassion at all!
